football and art combine in the first NFT exhibition

During the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) celebrates the art of the beautiful game with such a special exhibition. From Strike to Stroke includes 64 NFTs by 32 artists from the participating nations, while Artificial Intelligence (AI) combines the works from the two competing nations in each of the 64 matches to create a unique piece dependent on the outcome of the match. The result of the cooperation between humans and machines will be a collection of one-of-a-kind NFTs. Strike to Stroke is on display through December 23 at the Msheireb Galleria in Doha, Qatar.

As the world joins together for the World Cup, Ithra, a cultural bridge between Saudi Arabia and the rest of the world, transforms the world’s passion for football into its passion with the arts. The exhibition ingeniously integrates art, sport, and technology with the human-made and the machine-made.

It exhibits the work of 32 young and established artists, each of whom was charged with creating a painting reflecting their country using the jersey colors of their particular team. After each game, the AI-driven system mixes the artists’ creations with the game’s statistics to make one-of-a-kind artworks that symbolize each game. The collection will consist of one-of-a-kind pieces delivered as non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These cryptographic assets are based on blockchain technology and are created in a manner comparable to that of cryptos. From Strike to Stroke features artists who have never developed NFTs as well as NFT artists who have never worked in fine art.

“The passion shared by football fans for the love of the beautiful game can be tangential to the passion shared by art aesthetes,” said Dr. Shurooq Amin in her curator’s brief to the exhibition. “By connecting 32 artists from both the traditional and digital arenas, Ithra not only bridges the gap between Web2 to Web3, and between football and art, but furthermore between human and machine, as the artists collaborate with AI generation technology to create unique NFTs that combine art, football and technology.”
