Screenshots show a Microsoft Web3 wallet that is linked into Edge and supports non-custodial crypto and NFTs.
Microsoft reportedly plans to add support for cryptocurrencies and nonfungible tokens (NFTs) to its Edge web browser by integrating a Web3 wallet.
On March 17, Albacore, a software leaker who also documents software, tweeted what it claimed to be screenshots of Edge’s user interface (UI) showing the company’s new Web3 wallet in its early stages.
“Newest in the gauntlet of questionable planned Microsoft Edge features, a crypto wallet not really sure how to feel about this kind of thing being baked into the default browser,” Albacore remarked.
Albacore expressing disappointment, adding, “Newest in the gauntlet of questionable upcoming Microsoft Edge features, a crypto wallet not really sure how to feel about this kind of thing being baked into the default browser.”
The first screenshot appears to be the initial page of the Edge wallet. “we encourage you to test our first Web3 wallet and provide candid feedback along the journey,” Microsoft may say.
If this is true, Microsoft won’t have access to your wallet’s recovery keys or passwords, and the wallet will be “integrated in Edge” rather than a browser extension.
The screenshots show how to send, trade, and buy cryptocurrency assets. MoonPay and Coinbase are described as integrated “platforms that allow you acquire and deposit crypto to your wallet” on the Web3 infrastructure provider’s website.
Microsoft’s move is likely another recent attempt to drastically improve Edge’s services and capabilities, which have traditionally been less well-liked than those of competitors like Google Chrome and Apple Safari.
As part of updates to its Bing and Edge browsers, Microsoft announced on February 7 that AI-powered search engines and ChatGPT will be combined using OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
