The story of a Wrapper: The disposable nature of touristic memories

The_story_of_a_Wrapper_The_disposable_nature_of_touristic_memories

“Leave the Earth – Garbage in Metaverse’ is the initial NFT of Stephen Vineburg’s series ‘Been There, Done That’. This artwork concentrates on a pastry wrapper which has traveled the world. Presently, it is traveling to space and the metaverse. The focus of the work is on the transition from physical art to digital, whether as an accessible AR experience or an exclusive NFT.

What is ‘Been There, Done There’?

The wrapper has already traveled virtually across the Globe, changing its shape and dimensions. The whole series features a wry observation about the disposable nature of tourist memoirs. Simultaneously, it highlights the real waste tourism causes on Earth and beyond.

Stage 1: Physical arts

In 2020, Stephen Vineburg shown the conceptual sculpture, “Been There, Done That” at an outdoor exhibition in the Giardini Marinaressa, Venice. In a conceptual sense, it represents the disposable nature of many tourism experiences. Visually, it reflects the loss of tourist consumerism. This drew a backlash from Venetians who are already concerned about the impact of tourism on their city.

Stage 2: AR

The initial stop in the transition from physical to digital art is to create an augmented reality experience that lets the Wrapper travel around the world. To clarify, the Wrapper filter on Instagram allows users to place the 3D model of the Wrapper anywhere and trigger an animation that shows the Wrapper being opened and turned into trash.

Stage 3: NFT

The second digital form of the piece is a collection of NFTs featuring the Wrapper in unconvincing situations. The initial of these is ‘Leave the Earth – Litter in Metaverse’ that shows the Wrapper on an asteroid floating in space. It reminds us of humanity’s ability to explore new worlds and thereafter dump its particles on them. Given the current rivalry between billionaires, it looks reasonable. The point of becoming a space tourist and checking it off your bucket list, is just – that is to say – “Been There, Done That”. This piece has been published on Foundation.

Stage 4: Metaverse

The last step of the Wrapper’s journey is the Metaverse. It will be there on a banner in the Decentraland Metaverse. In that sense, “Leave the Earth – Litter in Metaverse’ is officially the initial piece of litter in the Metaverse.

You can read more about the project on the Stephen Vineburg official website. Thereafter, check out the ‘Been There, Done That” drop on Foundation.
