Although everyone agrees that the Metaverse, a 3D representation of the real world where we can communicate with people in real-time, is the next step in the evolution of the Internet, the reality is that no company is even close to achieving that goal.

How far are we from the metaverse?

The Metaverse still requires major development even though several virtual worlds, like Second Life, Axie Infinity, and others, have been utilized in the gaming industry.

However, Meta is progressing more quickly than its rivals. Additionally, Mark Zuckerberg has made several important purchases, with the $2 billion purchase of VR headset developer Oculus being the most notable.

The company has invested well throughout the years, enabling it to control a wide range of markets in the future. Just a handful of these purchases include Instagram, WhatsApp, and Within.

They are all social networking sites, which unites these elements. A Metaverse is a place where people may interact with one other in a virtual setting. The main objective here is to monopolize the Metaverse market before anybody else has an opportunity to do so. That’s a high objective. It’s also not impossible.

Despite Meta being the market leader, the US Army is developing considerably more quickly while garnering far less attention.

Environment for US Army Synthetic Training

The Synthetic Training Environment, or STE, is an Army virtual reality (VR) effort that will allow them to achieve several objectives at once. This project, which has been under development since 2017, intends to provide soldiers with realistic training simulations.

In addition to being a tool for military training, the STE serves as a platform for experimentation and study. The Army uses the STE to educate commanders and test cutting-edge operational strategies.

In other words, the STE is the perfect setting for Metaverse experimentation.

Although it is still under development, the STE has come a long way. The Army has created a variety of environments in the past, including cities and deserts. In contrast to Meta, the Army is also developing the STE on an open platform. This suggests that anybody can produce for it.

This has far-reaching implications. Imagine a world where everyone is free to create their own virtual space and invite others to visit it. There are many options.

How Might This Impact the Metaverse?

The fact that the US Army is approaching the Metaverse is noteworthy. The Army is not only developing the Metaverse on an open platform, but it is also more advanced than other organizations in terms of development.
It may be an issue for Meta. If the US Army’s Metaverse takes off, Metaverse will be left behind.
